Nothing that takes place this week can erase what happened in June.
Minutes before he was to begin play in the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club, Cox was called off the course. He was told his mother, Valerie, had been taken seriously ill back home in San Antonio, Tex.
Cox and his father, Elmo, who had gone to Wannamoisett to caddy for his son, caught the first plane home.
Four days later, Valerie Cox was dead at age 48....
