Elaborate Gardens Were Everywhere. An Admissionfee Of 15 Cents Was Taken By Guards At The Gates And The Park Was Locked Atnight."<{Rest} Many Years Later, In The 1960s, The City's Park Department No Longer Hadfunds For The Maintenance Of This Water Feature Popularly Called The Lagoon,And So It Was Decided To Cover The Rock Garden With Clay, So Grass Could Beplanted And The Area Mowed. I Did So, Took Pictures And Look Forwar D To The Restoration Of Thelagoon, Even If It Means Reinstating A 15-Cent Admission Charge.< Many Homes And Gardens In The Lafayette Square Area Have Undergonerenovations And Reawakenings In Recent Years, And It's Always An Inspirationto Visit Them. Lafayette Park Is Special To Me Because My Mother And Fatherlived In The Area And Met There At A Band Concert.< I've Attended Past Tours Of The Homes And Find They Bring Back Nostalgicrecollections Of The Century-Old Home My Family Occupied In Webster Groveswith Its High Ceilings, Fireplaces And Vintage Grace.< There Were 12 Houses And Eight Gardens On Last Weekend's Tour, And My Timepermitted A Visit To Only A Few Of Them, But Those We Saw Were Truly Lovely.The French Empire House On Albion Place, Where Paul Acker And Andrew Hernandezlive, Was One Of Them. Its Back Yard Had A Complete Overhaul A Few Years Agoand Now Has A Handsome Fountain And Flower Beds. Direction Arrows Outside Theback Door Led Us To One Of The Gardens On Tour, In Back Of A Park Avenue Homeowned By Don And Mary Kay Owens.< He Told Us That 80 Percent Of The Plants Came From His Neighbors, Includingbamboo Shoots , An Herb Garden And 60 Cannas, Which Multiplied Last Year Into300. This Charming Garden Had Many Interesting Plants, Including A Beardedthistle In Bloom.< We Noted That Several Gardens Listed Were On Lasalle Street, So We Visitedthose Addresses And Found The Gardens Of Rick Thompson And Artemus Phillipsand Justin Sweeney. I'm Not Quite Sure Which Were Which, But My Wavering Notesrecord The Presence Of Blue Hydrangeas, Pink Lilies, Waterlilies In A Pond Anda Garden Thought For The Day: "The Mind Is Like A Garden, Periodically Needingweeding." Another Garden In The Area Was A Lovely Shady Retreat With Handsomeholly Hedges And Lush Ivy Plantings.< Gwendolyn Moore Of Park Avenue Gallery Had Called Me Before The Tour Totell Me Of The Exhibit Of Floral Paintings On Display There So We Stopped Byand Enjoyed The View Of The Charming Garden In Back Of The Gallery. There Weresome "Before" Pictures Showing A Bare Landscape Except For Two Catalpa Trees.A Storm Snapped One Of The Catalpa Trees, And Eventually Both Were Removed Tomake Way For Curving Borders Of Colorful Flowers Around A White Chat Patiowith Enough Room For Tables And Chairs For Outdoor Gatherings.This Is Only Abrief Bit Of This Elegant Tour; We Went On To The Ferguson House And Gardentour And Hope To Describe It In A Future Column.<)(Profile\Lafayette Park)
