In 1634, explorer Jean Nicolet became the first white man to pass through the Straits of Mackinac. This thirty-six-year-old Frenchman did not record his impression of this important waterway that connected two Great Lakes. He may not have even stopped, especially since he was seeking the Northwest Passage to the Far East. Nicolet never found the elusive shortcut to China, but he was the first European to see Lake Michigan.
