Cyndy Curley has a penchant for abandoned lurchers and discarded greyhounds. Gale Young is devoted to sleek Weimaraners and fiesty Norfolk terriers.

Curley is active in Greyhound Friends, a nonprofit organization based in Hopkinton that rescues and finds homes for former racing dogs. Young, who breeds Weimaraners, holds a lofty spot in the rarefied dog show world. She judges nearly 30 breeds and often serves as a show steward, handling the details that keep an American Kennel Club event running smoothly.
