NEIGHBOURS of a sand mine in Macassar claim the effects of illegal mining have been devastating on the environment.

Maryam Salie of the Concerned Neighbours of the Sandvlei Area said there had been no action from the Department of Minerals and Energy, despite the community's complaints.

"They're mining in the green belt of Macassar, where there's been no policing - even after we complained to authorities," said Salie.
