Q. Why does wood float?

A. The simple answer is that wood is less dense than water, says UW-Madison wood products professor Scott Bowe.
In the wood products field, people use a measure of density called specific gravity, which is the ratio of wood's density to the density of water, Bowe said. Water has a specific gravity of 1.0, while most types of wood have a specific gravity less than that.
