PLASTIC shopping bags could become a thing of the past in Garstang if an idea put forward by the town council goes ahead.

Coun Dulcie Atkins brought up the issue at the latest council meeting, when she discussed the example of Modbury, South Devon - the first town in Britain to bring an end to plastic bags.

In May this year, traders in Modbury stopped issuing plastic bags with the sale of goods. Instead, the council issued every household with a reuseable cotton carrier bag, and encouraged residents to either take their own shopping bags out with them, or ...
