The 400km Namaqualand coastline between the estuaries of the Olifants and Orange rivers is part of an ecosystem rated so important that it's one of just two semi-arid regions featuring among the world's proclaimed 34 "global biodiversity hotspots".

But this same coastline has been subjected to diamond mining on such a massive scale over many decades that hundreds - possibly thousands - of hectares of its threatened Succulent Karoo vegetation have been devastated. No one is quite sure just how much of the approximately 10km wide coastal strip has been affected.
