Introduction

The Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has expressed concern about the management and conservation of bowhead whales, Balaena mysticetus, in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort (B-C-B) Seas (Map 1). (1) In particular, the committee has inquired whether "observed temporal and spatial heterogeneity" might exist within the population (IWC, 2005:19-22), resulting in "subpopulations with limited interbreeding."
