The unscientific land application of poultry manure could have adverse impacts on the soil as well as groundwater resources. These can be prevented by developing effective best management practices. Such practices should include proper nutrient management using agronomic rates of N and P, correct timing and placement of manure, proper irrigation scheduling and the use of buffer zones between treated areas and waterways.
