Rebecca Harding Davis's "Life in the Iron Mills" is a compelling work of realist fiction that derives much of its power from a complexly organized framing structure. Although critics have tended to describe its narrative as "three-tiered"(1) - moving from the narrator's frame, to Deborah's, to Hugh's, and then outward again - its framing structure, particularly in the outer frame, is much more complicated, involving simultaneous interconnections among all three "characters" and with the reader.
