In the mid-1920s, just as an exciting new type of flowering shrub was becoming popular around the South, a Jackson mother and her teenage daughter were swept up in the craze along with countless other Mississippians. Chestina Welty and young Eudora adored the camellia for the color it could bring to a barren landscape from late fall through early spring, and they planted dozens of camellias in many varieties.
Today, visitors to the Eudora Welty House can still see more than 40 camellias planted by the author and her mother many years ...
