The factors behind state unemployment rate differences are explored within a unifying, empirical framework. First, shift-share analysis was employed to decompose the causes of regional employment growth into national state-idiosyncratic factors. Secondly, earnings were decomposed into a 'wage-mix component' to isolate the impact of wait unemployment from cost competitiveness effects.
