The police raid on the Nation of Islam Mosque in Los Angeles, CA, on the night of Apr. 27, 1962, further heightened the conflict between Afro-American leaders and white political leaders. Many black leaders believed that the raid, which contributed to the ideological development of Malcolm X, was racially motivated. On the other hand, their white counterparts saw the conflict as an indication of the violent nature of the Nation of Islam.
