The non-profit St. John's Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, had to reevaluate its priorities after massive damage was sustained following the Jan. 17, 1994 Los Angeles earthquake. The hospital originally planned to build a new $40 million ambulatory pavilion. However, damages incurred by its main facilities raised the question of whether fund-raising should focus on reconstruction or projects to meet the demands of the changing health care industry.
