In his analysis of the struggle of the African peasantry of the Transvaal colony to regain their ancestral lands during the Anglo-Boer War, Jeremy Krikler notes that "in many ways, the history of the rural Transvaal in the early twentieth century is their chronicle: the annals of the struggle between the people of the earth and those who sought to make them wretched" (173). African peasants sought to maintain their relative independence during the reconstruction period as primary producers on communal lands or as rent-paying tenants rather than alien labor, on European farms.
