AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE AWAY from the bank data processing business, alter V. Smiley, now 69, was pulled back in.

Tall and imposing, with gray hair and a warm smile, Smiley is well known in Arkansas for founding Systematics Inc., the state's first major high-tech company, in 1968. Systematics provided a wide range of data processing services to commercial banks.

The Hope native had just left the company when it was sold to Alltel Corp. in 1990 in a $528 million stock swap. Alltel then changed the name to Alltel Information Services. AIS was sold in 2003 to Fidelity ...
