Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, was idealised as the light of Italy' in Castiglione s Book of the Courtier (1528) and his state praised as 'a work of art' in Jacob Burckhardt's The Civilizalion of Renaissance Italy (1860). He is best-remembered for his distinctive profile portrait by Piero della Francesca in the Uffizi, and for his palace in Urbino, one of the most elegant and imaginative buildings of the renaissance. The duke's library of 900 manuscript volumes, by the leading scribes and illuminators of Florence, Ferrara, Mantua and Padua, was assembled in 1464-82. ...
