Shippers wary as railroads settle gaps over merger. (proposed merger of Santa Fe Railway and Burlington Northern Railroad)

Opposition to the merger of the Santa Fe Railway and the Burlington Northern Railroad is waning, as those carriers complete agreements with other railroads on trackage and service rights. But a shippers' group, the National Industrial Transportation League, remains opposed to the merger. The league wants voluntary competition-protection agreements to be imposed by the ICC as required provisions.

The proposal to link the Burlington Northern Railroad and Santa Fe Railway into the nation's largest railroad is slowly gaining ground.
