Political posturing for and against science is as old as the republic. The latest surge is typified by a spate of popular new books. The Republican War on Science, for example, tells us that religious conservatives and business interests have forced Republicans to dismiss science and oppose stem cell research and teaching evolution in public schools. At the same time, Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth extols science, arguing that it will save us from global warming.
