SHIKOKU IS THE SMALLEST of the four main islands that comprise Japan. It is also the focus of the country's most famous, but also most challenging, pilgrimage. Undertaken by 150,000 people a year, on foot, on bike or (mostly) in coaches, Shikoku Hachijuhachikasho Meguri involves visiting eighty-eight Buddhist temples, connected by a route of about 1,400 kilometres around the whole of the island. On foot, it takes between forty days and two months to complete.
