Genuine Chinese lacquer was made from the sap of the lacquer tree. This finish looks lacquerish, but is simply high-gloss paint.
The openwork geometric Z's and T's on the back are typical of furniture inspired by the Brighton Pavilion.
Black and red were favorite lacquer colors in China. Whites and brights are contemporary options.
The fretwork on chairbacks, and details like the four little spandrels at the front corners, are easily broken. Check for missing bits, which--with so much going on--may not immediately be apparent.
