Wandering through this newspaper's archives, I happened upon an article that appeared Nov. 11, 1918, the day the guns fell silent along the Western Front.
Under the headline "West Upton Boy Develops New Gas Mask," the article tells of the efforts of Harry D. Batchelor, an Upton native who helped develop masks to protect U.S. servicemen from the poison gases being used during World War I.
