Jun. 20--IBM and Apple Computer Inc. took their PowerPC alliance one step further Monday by announcing that they are negotiating the licensing of the Macintosh operating system to Big Blue.

The announcement, made at the PC Expo trade show in New York, means that IBM could sell PowerPC machines using Apple's Mac operating system as early as the second half of 1996, said Anthony Santelli, general manager of IBM's Power Personal Systems Division.
