The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it will assume rental-housing assistance for families affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, taking over from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

HUD's Disaster Housing Assistance Program (DHAP) will transition the approximately 30,000 FEMA-assisted hurricane-displaced families who are living in private rental units, using HUD's network of public housing authorities (PHAs) to provide housing assistance and case-management services to eligible families.
