You think of landscapes, you think of Gainsborough; you think of portraits and you can choose - at least in the 18th century - between Romney or Joshua Reynolds. But for horses it has to be George Stubbs - the one and only.

Nobody since Stubbs has ever represented that noblest of animals in quite the same way.

He was a Romantic who combined equine beauty with the perfect landscapes so admired by his 18th century aristocratic patrons, who frequently owned the views which everyone else admired so much.
