The Taif agreement, signed in 1989, has helped foster peace in Lebanon by mandating a redistribution of governmental powers to the different political and religious sects. It also helped spur the 1992 national elections which solidified the agreement's legitimacy and established Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri's government. Moreover, the signing of the Lebanese-Syrian Friendship Treaty aided in the dismantling of armed militias and in promoting general peace.
