Veteran's cancer linked to service.

A ROYAL Navy veteran died from lung cancer as a result of the time he spent working in the engine room of ships where pipes were lagged with asbestos, an inquest heard.

Seventy-two-year-old Francis Palmer, of Brook Street, Soham, had malignant mesothelioma, a type of cancer which, the hearing at Ely heard, in 97 per cent of cases recorded was linked to exposure to asbestos.

Mr Palmer had served with the navy as a mechanical engineer between 1952 and 1959. He died at his home on March 31.
