THE last Sunderland right-back called Kay made quite a name for himself.

From pretending to paddle his way off the pitch on a stretcher after breaking his leg to ploughing into challenges with such ferocity that he was once likened to a runaway tractor, the legend of John Kay is remembered and smiled about to this day.

We have yet to see such eccentricities from Michael Kay - no relation to John - but if the 17-year-old from Consett eventually wins over Sunderland fans, as his namesake did in the late 1980s and early 90s, then he'll have done a good job.
