Irish language activists in Derry have rejected comments made by culture minister Edwin Poots about the number of people in the North who speak Irish.

DUP MLA Edwin Poots questioned how many of the 10 per cent of the population listed as Irish speakers in the 2001 census would be able to complete the form without English instructions.

Speaking in a Stormont debate on funding for the Irish language, the DUP MLA said: "I would be interested to know how many of those ten per cent could actually read and understand the document if it was sent to them in Irish ...
