Council borrows [pounds sterling]8m to fund equal pay.

SOUTH Tyneside Council is set to borrow more than [pounds sterling]8m from the Government to tackle pay inequalities.

The council is one of 46 authorities - six from North East England - to borrow from a [pounds sterling]500m pot.

Unison today welcomed the move as a "significant breakthrough" in its long-running battle for pay equality.

South Tyneside Council asked for [pounds sterling]13m, but is set to receive [pounds sterling]8.6m to fund the back pay claims of female school teaching assistants, nursery nurses and administrative staff.
