Oppositions - such as those between self and other, feminine and masculine, black and white, fiction and history - abound in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea. As Judith Moore has pointed out, critics who have addressed this novel have therefore tended to discuss it in terms of these or other pairings present in the text. Moore herself attempts to analyze the novel as a "unity" by bringing these oppositions closer together and seeing them as "subversive juxtapositionings" (21).
