A research team at Japan's Osaka University has developed a formulation of the photocatalytic substance titanium oxide that can be safely applied to fibres to keep clothing clean.

Titanium oxide can catalyze the degradation of organic compounds, but it can also damage fibres. It cannot be applied directly to textiles as a result. Encapsulating the photocatalyst is one way to ensure it does not make direct contact with the fibres.
