Childhood literacy, for Ed Kochian, is a consuming passion. Onondaga County's deputy county executive is quietly asking community leaders to make a renewed commitment to teaching reading skills to every child.
For help with that campaign, Kochian knew where to go. He spoke Friday at City Hall Commons before FOCUS Greater Syracuse. The mission of that longstanding community group, according to executive director Chuckie Holstein, is giving voice to citizens on a grass-roots level.
