Many of the more than 10 million Americans with adult-onset diabetes have long faced an unappealing way to fight the disease: a pill that helps control their blood sugar but can also increase their risk of serious complications, like blindness and heart disease. But last week these patients - who have a form of the disease called Type II diabetes - were offered an alternative, the first truly new oral diabetes drug approved in almost 20 years.
