ABSTRACT Growth and survival of the Japanese abalone Haliotis discus hannai were studied over a six-month period at the Center for Abalone Production, Universidad Catolica del Norte, Coquimbo, Chile. Cultures were carried out in lantern and basket nets suspended in seawater tanks having a constant flow of fresh seawater from La Herradura Bay. A total of 900 juveniles were observed, starting with individuals having an average length of 20 mm. The abalone juveniles were fed with two ...

Utilization of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate by abalone Haliotis discus hannai: a review.
Journal of Shellfish Research
; ABSTRACT Feeding Haliotis discus hannai depends mainly on the use of macroalgae such as Undaria sp. or Laminaria sp., although the species is an important mariculture shellfish in Korea. Research on the utilization of protein, lipid, and carbohydrate in formulated diets by H. discus hannai has been

Molecular markers used to analyze species-specific status in abalones with ambiguous morphology.(Report)
Journal of Shellfish Research
; ABSTRACT Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) and Californian red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) are easily distinguished by their shell and epipodial characteristics. A few individuals of H. rufescens were discovered to have epipodial coloration similar to that of H. discus hannai suggesting

RAPD analysis of genetic diversities of three species of abalone.(random amplified polymorphic DNA)
Journal of Shellfish Research
; RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) technique was applied to detect the genetic diversity in 3 species of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino, Haliotis discus discus Reeve and Haliotis diverscolar Reeve). Twenty random primers, screened out of 100, gave 213 clear and informative fragments,

Pyridoxine requirement of juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai Ino.(Report)
Journal of Shellfish Research
; ABSTRACT Juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai Ino (initial mean body weight: 0.56 [+ or -] 0.01 g, shell length: 15.74 [+ or -] 0.13 mm) were fed six diets with graded levels of pyridoxine (PN) (0.40, 12.5, 22.7, 43.5, 87.8, and 172.2 mg/kg diet). Each diet was fed to three replicate groups of
