The UK's occupation of Egypt in 1882 reflects the British government's determination to protect its interests outside Europe, particularly in Asia. The British saw France's invasion of Egypt as a challenge to the stability of its conquests and empire in Asia, since the French intended to use Egypt as a starting point from which to launch its imperialistic objectives. However, the French withdrawal from Egypt forced the UK to accept French hegemony in Europe.
