Sep. 25--"Cane," CBS' new soapy drama, seems to have everything going for it: a diverse cast of talented actors, a setting that lends itself to bright palettes, and plenty of plot lines that would provide a full season of entertainment.

Yet "Cane" falls flat, and it's hard to point out the exact reason why.

Perhaps it's because at least a halfdozen plot lines are crammed into the pilot episode. Maybe it's because "Cane" follows a staid soap-opera formula, with a few substitutions. Or it could be that "Cane" wants to capture the magic that was ...
