They are best known for their local charity work: raising funds to help the hungry, the homeless and the mentally retarded. But according to a recent series in The Boston Globe, the Knights of Columbus, a 113-year-old Catholic fraternal order, is a tax-exempt insurance monolith worth more than $4.5 billion that pays its chief executive salary and benefits in excess of $500,000 and that stifles internal criticism of its policies.
