The pope fails to provide an adequate answer to Catholics who live in liberal democracies, where pluralism and tolerance, not his imagined battle between good and evil, are the dominant realities. His authoritarian tone denies any space for theological dissent or individual conscience.
The basic positions taken in John Paul II's latest encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, are well-known -- the condemnations of direct abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty (its justification is practically nonexistent).
