It's not unusual for a Wisconsin liquor cabinet to contain a bottle of bitters - a dash or two is a routine ingredient in our Old Fashioned cocktail - but if you're like me, one bottle will last years, if not decades.
The norm is much different at Nelsen's Hall, the state's longest legally operated tavern, on Door County's Washington Island. Owner Tom Nelsen successfully argued during Prohibition that bitters - which are 90 percent alcohol - have medicinal value.
