ABSTRACT: This article rereads Immanuel Kant's Zum ewigen Frieden as an ironic and performative critique of the political censorship of philosophical texts on the one hand, and of Prussian imperial expansion into republican Poland on the other. By examining the historical situation in Prussia between 1795 and 1796, it shows that Kant deploys a mode of philosophical writing in which "saying" and "meaning" are made to diverge under political pressure.
