According to Roland Barthes, myth is a form of ideology. By naturalizing the cultural, it persuades us to acquiesce to forms of political and social order which benefit the privileged few. Such a view suits the American art world's current distrust of tradition, transcendence and the very notion of the sacred. We are suspicious of anything that claims to be universal or timeless, and suspect these terms of glossing over the horrors of history and the inequities of the present.
