Johannes Goritz, an immigrant from Luxembourg, was a humanist and a patron of poets in Rome during the 16th century for whom he held a poetry contest and a feast every year during the feastday of St. Anne. Goritz's guests gathered by the altar and recited poems whose themes ranged from the profane to the religious. The enthusiasm for this yearly gathering eventually waned as many refrained from attending them because of the growing rancor among competitors and hatred for things foreign that characterized activities. Gorlitz died during the pillage of Rome by the Germanic barbarians in 1527.
