The Church of England's decision to ordain women priests undermines its independent stand against the Roman Catholic Church by allowing members and clergy to transfer if they disagree with the policy. Historically however, the Anglican Church's posturing as a Protestant church has been constantly contradicted by its adoption of Roman Catholic rituals and hierarchy. At present it is also losing membership as more Britons prefer to express their spirituality without the trappings of ritual.
