The setting of Il Cigno (The Swan), the latest of Sebastiano Vassalli's novels (he has published five to date), is Italy at the turn of the century; the focus is Sicily in the eventful period stretching from 1860 (the year of Garibaldi's campaign that led to the unification of the nation) to the early 1920s.
