WARETOWN, N.J. _ At ocean's edge, a solid carpet of oyster shells lines Barnegat Bay and Oyster Creek, extending onto land and covering 12 to 14 acres. Many of the shells are cracked and broken, but many are unusually large, up to eight and 10 inches long.

Some are shaped almost like shoe soles, a form that occurs when an oyster is attached to a rock that is slowly being buried in rising sediment. The mollusk tries to grow fast enough to keep its mouth above the sand.
