Private-label clothing is increasing in market share, and brand-name clothing manufacturers are being asked by stores to produce private lines for them. Specialty stores report that private label clothing represents about 27% of their sales, while department stores report that it represents about 5%. Private label apparel is expanding from basic items, such as socks or T-shirts, to such areas as suits and dresses.
