If the story of the first Jewish settlement in America were told as a myth, we might narrate it this way: Twenty-three Jews, consisting of four couples, two widows, and thirteen children, fled Recife, Brazil, and sailed for the free shores of America, seeking liberty and opportunity. They came to the new promised land in September, 1654, to a city called New Amsterdam, later known as New York. They increased and multiplied and eventually became six million.
Such is the myth and myths die hard.
