The Chinese have a saying that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. South Africa and Lesotho embarked on such a journey exactly 10 years ago this month, when a declaration was signed to protect the harsh and fragile mountain environment which unites and divides the two nations.
A decade down the line, senior leaders of the two governments took another few steps forward this week - but there is clearly still a long way to go to turn the ideals of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation and Development Project into reality.
